Description:

Abstract:
The shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay are the ideal areas for many activities including crabbing, clamming, fishing, swimming, recreational boating, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) growth. Many of these uses don't compliment each other. This particular coverage is one of many coverages associated with the Shallow Water Use Conflict project that takes a look at each use by using GIS, and mapping the current location, or the most suitable area, for any given use.

Purpose:
To determine the suitable shallow water areas for oyster aquaculture.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Tidal water shoreline for Virginia (SHL) was unioned with bathymetry data (BATH) to produce a polygon coverage of bathymetry and land.
Process_Date: 2002

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The salinity data obtained from the Chesapeake Bay Program (SAL) was unioned with the shoreline coverage (SHL). Areas where the salinity didn't match our shoreline were cleaned up manually.
Process_Date: 2003

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The oyster aquaculture model coverage was created by unioning the above bathymetry and salinity coverages with the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV01) and shellfish condemnation zone (VMRC2) coverages. Optimal oyster aquaculture sites are those where SAV is absent, salinity > 7ppt, depth is 2m or less, and waters are outside condemned areas. Suitable oyster aquaculture sites are those where SAV is absent, salinity > 7ppt, depth is 2m or less, and waters are inside condemned areas. Unsuitable areas are where SAV is present and where salinity is < 7 ppt.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Below is a listing of the attributes found in OYSTMODEL. The first four items in the .pat are ArcInfo generated. OYSTRANK will contain a value of 'optimal' where SAV is absent, salinity > 7ppt, depth is 2m or less, and waters are outside condemned areas. The value of 'suitable' is given to area where where SAV is absent, salinity > 7ppt, depth is 2m or less, and waters are inside condemned zones. An 'unsuitable' value is given where SAV is present and where salinity is < 7 ppt.
